Mexican-born founder built a San Antonio workplace that stands for more than wealth. This Hispanic Heritage Month, Mavagi marks 25 years.

Raul Tintori was 10 years old when his family left Chihuahua, Mexico, for Chicago in search of a better life. He didn’t speak English. While his parents worked factory jobs, he walked more than 20 blocks to school on his own through Chicago winters.
At 11, he took a job at a convenience store. Whatever he earned went to help his family. He carried with him the values they gave him. He had a strong work ethic, loyalty to those around him, and the love of an abuelito who treated him like his own son.
Years later, he made his way to Texas. As he grew into his career, Raul saw what many workers see. Some workplaces measure success only in money, and the people inside them are overworked, underpaid, and overlooked. He decided to build something different.
In 2001, Raul left a secure job and founded Mavagi in San Antonio. He named it for his family, using the first letters of his wife Maria, his daughter Vanessa, and his son Giovanni. He wanted a workplace that stood for something more than wealth. He wanted a place people would enjoy coming to, where they would feel valued and seen.
The odds were against him. About half of new businesses close within five years, and only about one in four is still open at fifteen. This year, Mavagi marks 25 years. Today, it employs over 200 people across Texas, Georgia, and Florida.
Raul is quick to say he didn’t do it alone. The mission kept him going. His family stood behind him, and his siblings worked beside him in the organization. The people of Mavagi carried it forward every day.

Raul’s family came to this country in search of the American dream. He found it, and then he built a place where others could find it too.
