CANCÚN, Mexico, Oct. 5, 2026 – A research team from the University of Ottawa spent a week on site at Transcend Clinic, a physician-led addiction treatment clinic in Cancún, studying how the clinic screens, monitors and cares for its patients. The clinic has since invited the team to research its patient data together, with the goal of developing treatment protocols that increase benefit and reduce risk.
The team included Dr. Monnica Williams, Canada Research Chair in Mental Health Innovation and Equity at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Sonya Faber and Sergio Pérez Rosal. During their week on site, they observed the clinic’s medical screening, patient monitoring and its full mental health team at work.
Every prospective patient at Transcend is medically screened before acceptance, and the clinic’s medical director personally approves or declines each one. Accepted patients receive 24/7 medical monitoring for their entire stay, supported by a team that spans emergency medicine, critical care, cardiology and psychiatry.
The joint data research is intended to turn what the clinic does day to day into protocols that others in the field can study and use.
“We opened our doors to independent researchers because safety claims should be tested, not just stated. We want our data to help every patient, not only ours,” said Jorge Medina, CEO of Transcend Clinic.
